Malaysia upset Great Britain 1-0 to stay on course for a podium finish at the Sultan of Johor Cup.

The win gave Malaysia four points and moved them up the standings.

They will know their fate after their final pool match against Japan.

“ We played well, especially in defence and took our chance at the penalty corner for this important win.” said Malaysian coach Nor Saiful Zaini Nasiruddin.

“ After the big defeat against New Zealand, the players knew they had to uplift their game tonight.

“ Out main issue is focussing when not in possession and composure in the semi circle.”

The defending champions had collected nine points from three wins and only needed one point to book their place in Saturday’s final.

As for Malaysia, they were fighting for every point, as they were last in the pool standings going into this match.

Britain were all over the Malaysian semi circle, at one stage forcing four consecutive penalty corners but to no avail.

Try as they did, the Brits just could not get past a dodgy Malaysian defence.

And Malaysia took full advantage of a penalty corner in the 46th minute with Muhibuddin Mohammad converting for a 1-0 lead.

Britain were looking dangerous towards the closing stages but failed to get the all important equaliser.

“ Now we need to wait till Friday to see if we make the final” said Britain coach Jon Bleby.

“ Credit to Malaysia as they lifted their game and played a more composed game.”
