Press Release: FIH Hockey 5s World Cup Allocated to Oman.

Dato Tayyab Ikram Congratulates His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq

Muscat (Oman), 03 June 2021: Following the announcement from the International Hockey Federation, The Asian Hockey Federation is pleased to inform that the Sultanate of Oman has won the hosting rights for the FIH Hockey 5 World Cup. The Hockey5s’ flagship event is a brand-new FIH competition. 16 teams per gender (3 per continent + Oman, as hosts) will take part in this very first edition.

Chief Executive and General Secretary, AHF, Tayyab Ikram: It is a very special occasion that the Sultanate of Oman has won the hosting rights for the inaugural FIH Hockey 5s World Cup. I would like to offer my profound congratulations to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq the Sultan of Oman and His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, the Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth on this wonderful and a very special opportunity. We at the Asian Hockey Federation are extremely proud of Oman’s allocation for hosting this mega event and we have also shared this great news with our Royal Patron King of Malaysia Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah.

The Sultanate of Oman has a very rich history in Hockey and is a deserving host of the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup. This will help Oman, the region, and the continent to have a positive and long-lasting impact on the promotion of Hockey. I am convinced that the FIH Hockey 5s World Cup will be a great success and will be organized with the utmost professionalism, state-of-the-art facilities, and with an aspiration of excellence and diligence that we have come to expect from Oman.

The Hockey 5s format offers much more accessibility for hockey-playing nations and it will prove to be very important to close the performance gap between the high-performing and developing nations. This will be a historical event that will be remembered in the history of Hockey and will prove to be a milestone for the future of Hockey. I played quite a significant role in bringing Hockey 5s to the Youth Olympic Games and this format has already successfully featured in the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games and Buenos Aires YOG.

The Asian Hockey Family also joins me to congratulate the Sultanate of Oman on winning the hosting rights for such an important event. We also offer our special congratulations to Captain Talib President Oman Hockey Association, Mr. Zuhair Al Ajmi Executive Board Member AHF & OHA, and Mr. Shakir Munir Representative OHA.”

FIH CEO Thierry Weil said: “We’re looking forward to a wonderful inaugural FIH Hockey5s World Cup in Oman. This surely will be a great boost for the promotion of hockey both in the country and in the whole region. We’re convinced that Hockey5s will play a key role in the growth of hockey worldwide. This is why this World Cup has been created, as well as a Hockey5s World Tour which we are currently working on and which fans and athletes will have a glimpse of soon with the ‘FIH Hockey5s Lausanne 2021’ event.”

Oman Hockey Association President Captain Talib Al Wahaibi said: “I am very pleased, delighted, and grateful – We happily undertake this great responsibility to deliver the first ever FIH Men’s Hockey 5s World Cup at the highest possible standard and we will provide the state-of-the-art conditions for the athletes. It is a matter of pride for me, Sultanate of Oman, and Oman hockey. Our gratitude goes out to the FIH and AHF, for giving us the responsibility of hosting the FIH Men’s Hockey 5s World Cup and for their continued support in developing hockey in Oman. Winning the rights to host this innovative and attractive hockey tournament will open up great horizons and showcase the Sultanate of Oman around the world.”
